Electrical work is highly technical and in order to become a successful electrician it’s important to be a critical thinker and have a firm grasp of basic math and algebra. If you want to excel as an apprentice, journeyman, and eventually master it’s a good idea to pursue an education that aligns with your chosen career. So, what education do you need to become an electrician?
In order to qualify for an electrician training program you will need to have graduated Grade 12 or have a GED equivalent. Most programs will require that you have passed and scored well on a high level algebra course during or after high school. You may also require a drivers license to qualify depending on your location.
In order to become a Master electrician some states require that you obtain a Bachelors of Science in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university or college. The alternative to an electrical engineering degree is to complete seven years of journeyman electrician experience. An electrical engineering degree also qualifies an electrician to perform much higher level tasks and make a far better income.
Even after an electrician has completed their apprenticeship it’s important that they continue their education and regularly attend courses and seminars. Electrical work is constantly evolving with new processes and regulations developing everyday so it’s vital that an electrician stay educated and informed. Some states actually require that journeyman and master electricians attend courses in order to qualify for re-certification.
